The reason why the TCL R646 is much cheaper compared to other TVs with similar specs is that it is a 2021 model. There is a 2022 (R655) variant, but it is very hard to find and much more expensive. TCL R646 offers i.a Mini-LED panel with quantum dots (QLED). with full LED backlighting and 240-zone local dimming, as well as a wide color gamut. This makes it a great HDR TV, especially since it supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.

What’s good about “Mini LED”, “QLED” and “Local Dimming”?

The QLED panel enables this TV to maintain high color accuracy and good dynamic range even at peak brightness levels. The local dimming function allows different zones to be dimmed or brightened independently, making the TV adroit for scenes where the brightest whites and darkest blacks occur simultaneously. Mini LED panels allow even more accurate local dimming, because the controller zones are smaller and more numerous. While a regular LCD TV with local dimming can have up to 100 dimming zones, the TCL R66 boasts up to 240 zones.

Why is it a good gaming TV?

The TCL R646 keeps gamers protected. It has a native 120Hz panel and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. This means it can pass true 4K at 120Hz on PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles and gaming PCs equipped with RTX 30 cards. The TCL R646 also supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which is a version of this TV’s adaptive sync technology, as well Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), where the TV automatically switches to a lower latency when it detects gameplay.

What smart interface does it use?

The 2021 TCL 6 series is also new enough to adopt Google TV for smart TV support. Google TV is a definite update to the aging Android TV interface and works just as well as a Fire TV or Apple TV, even more so if you’re using an Android phone or tablet.
