Amritsar, October 16

The Global Sikh Council (GSC) today urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to enact a law to make conversion by force and inducement a crime, besides reserving jobs for Punjabis.

The resolution was unanimously adopted by GSC members from 14 countries during a conference titled “Sikhs in the 21st Century”.

Dr Kanwaljit Kaur, GSC chief, said they have warned Sikhs, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandak Committee (SGPC) and the state government about unethical conversions taking place in Punjab.

She said a comprehensive report had already been submitted to the CM and the government should bring a law against forced conversions, as Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had promised while campaigning for the 2022 Assembly polls.

SGPC chief Harinder Singh Dhami assured members that he would personally look into the issues raised by the GSC and work to implement them.

Some of the issues raised by the GSC were related to dharam parchaar, especially training of parchaars, conversions, preservation of Sikh heritage, implementation of Nanakshahi calendar, allocation of funds for education, health and employment of the poor.
