Ludhiana, October 1

As the Municipal Corporation failed to improve its performance, Ludhiana ranked 40th out of 45 cities across the country (over 10 lakh population) in the Swachh Survekshan-2022 nationwide cleanliness survey. The city ranked second in Punjab behind Amritsar, which took the top spot.

In 2021, Ludhiana ranked 39 out of 48 cities in the annual cleanliness survey. An MC health branch official said the city scored 3005.07 marks out of 7,500 marks.

Ludhiana scored 1373.22 marks out of a total of 3000 marks in the service level progress component; 1231.85 out of 2250 marks in Citizen Voice; Ludhiana has ODF+ status but received zero marks in the GFC (Garbage Free Cities) star rating and 400 out of 2,250 marks for the certification process.

MK failed to improve the solid waste management system. For Survekshan, the MC was required to ensure proper processing of solid waste and legacy waste but failed to do the same. About 30 million metric tons of solid waste has accumulated at the main MC landfill site near Kaka village.

The MC was also required to provide management of construction and demolition waste. Notably, the MC has failed to ensure compliance with the solid waste management rules for 2016, according to the NGT monitoring committee report.

Furthermore, the MC treatment plants were yet to be properly functional. However, the Buddha Zero Rejuvenation project is ongoing.
