Clive Barker may not have as many film adaptations as fellow horror writer Stephen King, but at least Barker’s directorial debut, 1987’s Hellraiser, is far superior to King’s single directing effort. Maximum overdrive. Barker also wrote the screenplay for Hellraiser (based on his short story The infernal heart), introducing the quirky Pinhead icon, her coenobite servants, and throwing some sadomasochism into the modern horror scene. In addition to the instantly recognizable appearance of the stinging Cenobites, the other trademark of the Hellraiser film is the puzzle box that offers a fast and winding track into another dimension. Doug Bradley played Pinhead in the first eight Hellraiser films, which, like many franchises, saw diminishing returns with critics and audiences as the series progressed heavily. A reboot and a new adaptation of Infernal Heart released in 2022. —Alex Vo
