An oenophile is a wine connoisseur. An alcoholic is someone who gets drunk on crappy stuff. Most people fall somewhere in between, drinking wine to enhance a meal, reward a job well done, survive the holidays, toast the end of the day, chase away the blues, or just to relax and unwind.

‘Sideways’ (2004)

Two old friends, Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), take a road trip through the California vineyards to drink wine, complain about first world problems, and generally act like a snob.

Alexander PayneThe film is a brilliantly observed portrait of a flawed man who just wants to drink wine. Like wine, Payne lets his dialogue-filled scenes breathe, allowing their complexity to unfold and hit the palate just right. Sideways’ passion for wine was so compelling that his third character, pinot noir, increased in sales by more than 20%. In fact, Pinot production in California has increased 170% since the release of the film, dubbed “The Sideways Effect” by winemakers. The effect cuts both ways, though. Because of Miles’ disdain for merlot, sales of that wine were curtailed.

“A Walk in the Clouds” (1995)

a walk in the vineyard of clounds keanu reeves Aitana Sanchez-Gijon

Paul (Keanu Reeves) has just returned home from WWII to find the woman (Debra Messing) he married impulsively before enlisting is not who he thought he was. Pregnant by her professor, Victoria is petrified by her father’s reaction, so her Paul agrees to accompany her to his family vineyard and pose as her husband.

It’s not hard to imagine these two falling in love in the beautiful Napa Valley setting, even though one is pregnant with another man’s child and the other is married to another woman. Sure, Hollywood likes to mix a little tragedy with its romance, so the family vineyard catches fire and the vineyard is destroyed, except for one small plant that Paul heroically rescued, saving the family legacy. one of the writers, Robert Mark Kamen, owned a vineyard in Sonoma and fire was his greatest fear, even though several associates had assured him that vineyards don’t burn. He not only kept it in the film, but proved naysayers right when his own vineyard caught fire less than a year after the film’s release. ]

A group of girlfriends, including SNL alums Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Rachel DratchAnd Tina Fei, celebrate a milestone birthday with a girls’ trip to Napa Valley. A group of middle-aged women and an almost unlimited supply of wine? Hilarity is sure to ensue.

The film’s enduring female friendships have seen many ups and downs over the years, but the wine has flowed freely through them all, soothing broken hearts, celebrating the birth of children, encouraging silly dance moves. Women don’t need alcohol to bond and should definitely be aware of the dangers of drinking. However, some studies suggest that drinking wine with your friends twice a week could help you live longer. Cheers to that!
